Enclave (Razorland Saga #1)-- Ann Aguirre

Enclave is the first book in the Razorland Saga written by Ann Aguirre. It's set in post-apocalyptic United States. The world (or I’m assuming this effected the entirety of the planet) is plagued by creatures dubbed “Freaks” in the College Enclave. Our story starts by following Girl15 into her naming day ceremony. She has survived 15 years in the enclave and has earned the right to be named. 

“That day had come. Girl15 was dead.

Long live Deuce.”

            Yes, Deuce is a weird name for a girl, or really for anyone. My husband laughed outright for the entire time I was describing this book because of that. But give it like two chapters and you realize how important that unique and weird name is. Most people in this book have weird names. Enjoy it.

            Her world is so very different than ours. She lives completely underground, her people have such a short life expectancy and living in close quarters means illness are a constant companion. Her job for the enclave is to be a Hunter—excuse me, I mean Huntress. (Gender is not important in the enclave. But that title is the only that understands the gender difference. Some try to make it demeaning but Deuce wore it with pride.) She provides food and protection for her enclave. She and her partner brave the pitch black tunnels, which we learn are a part of a subway system, day after day.

Her partner is Fade, a person who is scarred and sexy—well the sexy might just be in my opinion. He is an outsider who came to the enclave a few years before the books starts. He’s seen as a social pariah but Deuce looks up to him because he is the best. (We are the best, of the best, of the best. Sir!) But seriously, he is the best. He just gets in the zone when he fights and it is a kick-ass zone. Sure, Deuce gets into that zone too, but something about the dark haired man candy just is better to me. (In case, you can't tell, I like Fade as a character... Here's Some Logan Lerman who plays Fade in my head, sure they don't have any pictures of him wielding knives and pale from living underground but he still works for me. Enjoy. ;])

The two of them together are like Buffy the Vampire Hunter and Angel. Or I guess more like Katniss and Gale. They are a lean, mean killing machine. Deuce is stoic and emotionally stunted but has fierce determination. Fade has hidden feelings that are really apparent to everyone unless you are emotionally stunted.

I loved this book; I got sucked into the world. If a book can make me forget what’s going on outside in the real world than I’m an even bigger fan. Now that I admitted that I loved this book, I think this maybe my least favorite book out of the series. The last third is a bit slow and it’s missing a major climatic element.

Black and Orange and Freaks, Oh My!

I decided that it was high-time for me to organize all of my nail polish, rightly so, since I still can't find all of them. But what does digging through years worth of nail debris uncover-- HALLOWEEN STICKERS! Of course I don't necessarily care about using those. On the other hand, to say that LC was excited was an understatement. (Just in case you don't know LC is my four year old son.) LC and I spent our morning halloween-ing his nails out. I went more zombie--well that's what it will look like to everyone else but to me it is the Muties or Freaks from the Razorland Saga.

I think I am going to try and relate my nails to the book review(s) for that month. So look forward to three reviews, one for each of the books in the series. I dare say it goes with this month, what with it being October and all.

Movie Magic

This is a little taste of where I get to work.  I am astonishingly lucky to have gotten the my first ever job at the school I just graduated from and continue to be around people I adore. Our theme for this event was movies... so I dressed up as a version of Luna Lovegood, nothing extreme but I had fun. Especially since I spent most of my morning correcting people on their wrong-ness when it came to HP.

Oh, and I learned that I need to move slower when it comes to recording.

First Time for Everything

I was never one to think I would have a blog, what can I say-- times change. Here's to the start of "The 'B' Word"! A place where I can share my enthusiasm for Books, Beauty and My Life (Brenna)!

Two years ago, my glorious husband got me a tablet and free reign over our Amazon account. Since then I have read over 600 books and am still going strong. My preferences change daily but if it's enjoyable I will read it. Of course I have my guilty pleasure books, the ones that if anyone asked about I would deny all knowledge--but who doesn't?!

When I was going to cosmetology school it was common knowledge that I was never without my tablet and most mornings were started with the question, "How many books did you read last night?" In December, I will start working as an assistant in a salon, luckily it's a salon that will let my personality and fandoms show. I cannot wait to get this adventure rolling.
